FAQ
Yes, an FAQ damn you... got a problem? Wanna fight about it? No? Then shup up and read on!
Q: Why... OH DEAR GOD WHY?
A: Because I fucking well can. And by Job, that should be enough for anyone.
Q: Who exactly are you?
A: I'm just an average boy, Having fun on the interweb. Figured, I
might as well jump on the proverbial bandwagon, and blog around a bit.
Q: What's with your name?
A: You mean besides the excessive coolness? No? Ok. Dalif was a name I invented the night I signed up for my first internet connection and thus, email, ever. It was (still is) a contraction of the last names of the three people who lived in my household at the time. I thought, newb that I was, that an email was something precious and special, and that we'd all three share it. So I figured that'd be a good name. Only days later, I realized emails were about as easy to come by as a smack on the mouth, so I took it for myself. This was in '98... been using it as my nick ever since.
Q: So if Dalif isn't your real name, what is?
A: What's yours? Honestly tho, it's pretty easy to find out for yourself. So I'm not gonna give you the benefit of lazyness and just tell you. I do go by the name of Muh from time to time tho. But I'm sort of turning away from that now.
Q: I like your tagline - because wasting time is a lifestyle. Where'd you get that from?
A: Well I made it up. Yes, I know it's hard to believe in this day and age that people can actually still make stuff up all by their onesies. But you better recognize... it's my own creation. At least, so far. I'm sure out there in the world, another person's come up with the exact dame sentence. But for now, I'd like to think of it as my own. Turns out it's quite the popular catchphrase around the web. So I'm using it as much as I can. Netpresence and all that, don't you know.
Q: Who's that with you in here?
A: Well in case you haven't read up on the posts (who can blame ya
really), they are as follows:
- Holden is a guy I met playing SWG. He's a yank, as they say, from up north, and while I've never met the guy in real life, we got along quite well during our SWG days. He had, like me, a lot of doubts regarding what the hell to do in his life. Playing SWG and... well playing SWG was basically the only thing really going on in his life, so after a while he decided to join the army. And while doing that might seem pretty pointless for us Europeans.. or at least us Danes, joining the army in the States is a different deal altogether. Anyway, he got married like right after completing basic training, and is now going to be a father too... yes siree, old Holden will have himself a Holden/Holdine Jr. How ace is that?
- Ranc I met through playing Counter-Strike. I currently reside in Ranc's apartment, so I guess you could say we're pretty close. As with the others on this list, we share mentality on many things. And we do a lot of fun and amusing things. Only place where we truly differ, I think, is in our perception of food and how to go about mixing and matching. He hasn't been nicknamed the Food-Nazi for nothing, you know.
- Grue is pretty much like a brother to me in many ways. I met him when he was only 15 I think, as he was idling on our CS clan's IRC chan, but he always struck me as way more mature than the rest. He reminds me of myself in many ways, and while I do consider all my close friends brothers in a way, this guy has a little something else that makes him stand out.
- Casse was met through Counter-Strike and IRC. He and I share a lot of the same interests and we've always gotten along splendidly. We have our differences, of course, but we usually have a lot of laughs and fun when we look upon the world around us. Casse probably won't ever post on here, but he has a login nonethesame.. Just in case, you know.
- Illegal was introduced to me through Casse. He's quite a bit younger than the rest of us, but he is a fun guy, and his mindset fits in with the rest of the gang perfectly. Illegal is Belgian, and apparently the monopoly situation in Belgium when it comes to internet providers means all of them have download limits on their connections. This leads to hillarious consequences for the young Illegal.
- Louiszche is the most recent addition to the staff of writers here at dalif.org. I met her on a message board on tinternets, and while it took us some time to actually get to talk, I noticed her posts quite fast, and figured she was an interesting person. Eventually we got to talk, and I met her with a few other friends one night in town. Turns out, my near legendary character judgement skills was right on the money. An intellectual girl, with the perfect combination of twisted views on the world, and spot on dissections of everyday situations, that we've come to know and love here on dalif.org.
A:
Fair question I guess. Well, I'm a sharing kind of guy. Open sourced
and always willing to pass the torch if need be. While this blog is
mine, and named after me, I've always had a vision of several people
posting on it. While it's a vision I doubt I'll see realised (at least
at this point), I enjoy the sentiment that I've at least given them the
chance. They have the necessary rights, so if they post, they post. If
they don't.. well then that's just it. You'll have to settle for my
inane babblings.
Q: On what, and where is dalif.com hosted?
A:
old hardware. It's on a fairly stable but somewhat slow conn, which
might make up for slow load times. It will be better in the future tho.
The site is now hosted on a true and dedicated server, on a fast and
efficient and most of all, stable connection. My old mate has gotten it
all moved there, through his work (some other old friends), and I'd
like to thank them as well for hosting dalif.com.
Q: How long as this domain existed?
A: Well the blog as you see it now has existed since Dec. 29th 2005, where I decided it was time to do something with this domain. I bought dalif.com in 2001, because... I dunno why. I just wanted my name on teh web, I guess. At first I tried to build a page about British Comedy, something of which I'm a great fan. But my webdeveloping skills were mediocre at best, so I always got stuck at some fancy thing I wanted to do. The page changed looks and content over the years, until I discovered the great world of open source CMS blog/portal software. I checked a few out, and found the one I'm using now to be the coolest. And the rest is, as they say, history.
Q: What is the point of this blog?
A: I dunno. Don't care really. It's here now, live with it.
Q: I know you probably get this a LOT.... but I've been wondering if you're single by any chance?
A: Yeah I know it's an often debated topic. As words around the
proverbial campfire goes, this is huge. Yes, I'm
currently single, and while I'm not actively
looking, I wouldn't mind if anything interesting fell into my lap (pun
intended). Been single for a few months, so... but do use the old
contact form if you want to know more :p
Q: So what's with this post?
A: It's an FAQ... what do you want from me? You ask questions (that I make up), and I answer them.
Q: Commenting and Trackbacks. They serve which purpose again?
A:
Commenting, hopefully, needs no introplation or extroduction.
Self-explanatory seems to be the keyword here. Trackbacking, however,
is an entirely different matter. It seems to be a way of leaving a
comment from another site... with some special thingy... something. I
don't, to be honest, know the exact purpose of them.
Q: I can comment, but I can't post a trackback. What gives?
A:
Yeah well.. I had some problems with trackback spamming, so I
deactivated them completely. If you really want to leave a trackback,
let me know via a comment or whatever, and we'll work it out.
Q: Some links open in new windows, and some open in the same one. What is up with that?
A:
I've tried to keep it pretty simple. Basically there's two kinds of
links on dalif.com. 1 is the kind of link that opens in the same
window. These links are generally in-house links, in as much as
they refer to urls in the dalif.com network. The second kind of links
refer to urls outside the dalif.com structure, eg. imdb or other
outside services. The reason for this is simple. I've been using
firefox for quite some time, and I love the tabbed browsing features.
So when I read a text or a blog entry or whatever, I tend to click
links while I'm reading, and then getting on to those tabs afterwards.
Would be annoying if the links were opening in the same window. That's
basically why.
Q: How often do you post here on dalif.com?
A:
Nothing in life is 100% certain. Same goes for this blog. I post when I
feel like I have something to say, which happens surprisingly rarely.
But I do post in general every other or third day. As for the rest of
the crew, they post on occassion, but I'm the primus motor here. Hence
the blog name, see?
Q: I'm too lazy to set up my own blog
and/or I think you are the coolest guy in the entire world. Can I join
the esteemed and critically acclaimed dalif.com writing staff?
A:
Of course, sonnyboy. Just forward your credentials (name and mail
adress, and you're basically in). Of course, with limited abilities,
until I know what the fuck you are really up to (on here, people are
guilty until they've proven themselves to be totally and fundamentally
innocent in every aspect of life (that includes baby-eating, Chris!)).
Q: You seem to start a lot of post with the word 'well'. Explain yourself!
A:
Well I thin... oh.. HEY! It's just such a nice word. Well. It's like
you're answering somebody, and then launch into a long explanation of
some kind. Makes it seem like I'm merely answering a popular question
in my posts.
Q: You seem to constantly refer to people who
read this blog as "you guys" or some endearing term like that. Is there
actually a whole group of people consistently reading this blog?
A:
No... no there's not. I just do that to appear to have millions of
devoted fans. And it works! It made you ask this question, didn't it?
Q: What do you do, if you're running out of questions, when typing an FAQ?
A: You end it. Like thus!
